ANCHORS AWEIGH

Anchors aweigh, my boys, anchors aweigh!

Farewell to college joys,

we sail at break of day-day-day-day.

Through our last night on shore,

drink to the foam.

Until we meet once more

here’s wishing you a happy voyage home!

MANDALS-SHANTY (Santiana)

Me hyrte oss i Mandal med den gamle bark “Carin”

Hiv og hei, Santiana

Så satt’ vi kurs for Engeland i laber østenvind

Hiv og hei, we’re bound for Mexico

Ref:

En gammel gallionsfigur

har gjort opp sitt bestikk.

Men minnet om den siste tur

står preget i mitt blikk.

Kanhende ble jeg skakk og skjev

i livets basketak.

Men ennå er jeg kavaler

med ryggen like rak.

A-ROVING

In Amsterdam there lived a maid

Bless you, young women

In Amsterdam there lived a maid

Oh, mind what I do say

In Amsterdam there lived a maid

And she was mistress of her trade

Ref:

I’ll go no more a-roving with you, fair maid

A-roving, a-roving, since roving’s been my ru-i-in

I’ll go no more a-roving with you, fair maid

I took this fair maid for a walk

--

And we had such a lovely talk

--

Ref:

I took this fair maid on my knee

--

She said: “Young man, you’re rather free”

--

Ref:

But when I’d spent my twelve months’ pay,

--

that girl, I say, was clean away

--

Ref:

SHENANDOAH

Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you

Away, you rolling river

Oh Shenandoah, I long to hear you

Away, I’m bound to go

‘cross the wide Missouri

Oh Shendandoah, I love your daughter

--

Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter

--

Oh Shenandoah, I’m bound to leave you

--

But Shenandoah, I’ll not deceive you

--

Oh Shenandoah, I had a notion

--

To sail across the stormy ocean

SKOMVÆRVALSEN

Og skuta het “Skomvær” av Porsgrunn by.

Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv-ho!

Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv-ho!

Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv-ho!

Ref:

Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv-ho!

--

Ref:

Stand by, gamle gutter, når klokken slår

--

Stand by, gamle gutter, med havsalt i hår

--

--

OPSANG TIL BRASILIEFAREREN, BRIGGEN ”PRECIOSA” (RIO GRANDE)

Oh say, were you ever in Rio Grande?

Oh, Rio!

It’s there that the river flows down golden sand

And we’re bound for the Rio Grande

Ref:

Then away, love, away,

way down Rio!

So fare ye well my pretty young girl

for we’re bound for the Rio Grande.

Farvel du gamle graa, farvel

--

Vi tænker at du staar nok lel

--

Ref:

Men herlig som en Afensky

--

I vest gaar op en Verden ny

--

Ref:

Og agter gaar den hvide Fos

--

Saa følg os du stolte Albatros

--

Ref:

Da raaber vi til Vinden: ”Blæs!”

--

Vi længes efter Lindesnæs

--

SACRAMENTO

As I was walking down the street

To my hoday, to my hoday

a charming girl I chanced to meet.

To my hoday, hoday, ho

Ref:

Blow, boys, blow

for Californio

There is plenty of gold, so I’ve been told,

on the banks of Sacramento

I asked her then to come with me

--

down to the docks, my ship to see.

--

Ref:

She quickly answered: “Oh dear, no

--

I thank you, but I cannot go.”

--

Ref:

I said goodbye and strolled away

--

although with her I longed to stay.

HOME FROM THE SEA

On a cold winter’s night

with the storm on its height

a lifeboat answered the call.

They pitched and they tossed

till we thought they were lost

as we watched from the harbour wall.

Though the night was pitch-black

there was no turning back

for someone was waiting out there.

And each volunteer

had to live with his fear

as they joined in a silent prayer.

And carry them

Ref:

Home, home, home from the sea,

angels of mercy, answer our plea.

And carry them

Home, home, home from the sea,

carry us safely home from the sea.

As they battled their way

past the mouth of the bay

‘twas blowing like never before.

As they gallantly fought

everyone of them thought

of loved ones back on the shore.

And a flicker of light

and they knew they were right

there she was on the crest of a wave.

She’s an old fishing-boat

and she’s barely afloat,

please God, there are souls we can save.

And carry them

Ref:

And back in the town

in the streets that run down

to the sea and the harbour wall.

They had gathered in pairs

at the foot of the stairs

to wait for the radio call.

And just before dawn

when all hope was gone

came a hush and a far-away sound

‘Twas the captain, he roared:

“All survivors on board!

Thank God, and we’re homeward bound!”

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

In South Australia I was born

Heave away, haul away!

In South Australia ‘round Cape Horn

We’re bound for South Australia

Ref:

Haul away, you rolling king!

Heave away, haul away!

All the way you’ll hear me sing:

We’re bound for South Australia

As I walked out one morning fair

--

‘Twas there I met Miss Nancy Blair

--

Ref:

I walked her up, I walked her down

--

I walked her ‘round and ‘round the town

--

Ref:

There’s just one thing that grieves me mind

--

It’s to leave Miss Nancy Blair behind

--

THE LEAVING OF LIVERPOOL

Goodbye to Prince’s Landing Stage,

River Mersey, fare thee well

And the girls who rolled me for my gold,

Walton Rosie and Lime Street Nell.

Ref:

So fare thee well, my own true love,

when I return united we will be.

It’s not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me

but me darling, when I think on thee.

I have signed on board a clipper ship,

a boat you all know well.

And Burgess is the captain of her,

and they say she’s a floating hell.

Ref:

We are bound for Californ-i-a

by the way of stormy Cape Horn.

When those wild waves play around the decks all day

you’ll be sorry you ever signed on.

Ref:

PADDY, LAY BACK

‘Twas a cold and frosty morning in November

when all of me money it was spent.

What happened to it all I can’t remember

when down to the shipping office went

Ref:

Paddy, lay back! Paddy, lay back!

Take in your slack! Take in your slack!

Take a turn around the capstan, heave a pawl, heave a pawl!

About ship, station boys, be handy.

We’re bound for Valaparaiso ‘round the Horn!

That time there was a great demand for sailors

for Colonies, for ‘Frisco and for France.

So I shipped aboard a limey bark, “The Hotspur”

and got paralytic drunk on my advance.

Ref:

Now, some of the fellows they’d been drinkin’

and I meself was heavy with the booze.

So I sat on me old sea-chest a-thinkin’

that I’d lay down in me bunk and have a snooze.

Ref:

I woke next morning sick and sore.

I knew I was outward bound again.

I heard a voice a-calling at the door:

“Get up, lads, and answer to your name!”

Ref:

13

ROLLING HOME

Call all hands to man the capstan,

see the cable run down clear.

Heave away, and with her will, boys,

for old Norway we will steer.

Ref:

Rolling home, rolling home, rolling home

across the sea.

Rolling home to dear old Norway,

rolling home, dear land, to thee.

Sometimes we are bound for Hamburg,

sometimes we are bound for France,

but now we’re bound for Norway,

give Norwegian girls a chance.

Ref:

Eastward, eastward, ever eastward

to the rising of the sun.

Homeward, homeward, ever homeward

to the land where we were born.

Ref:

LEAVE HER, JOHNNY, LEAVE HER

Snart pumper vi for siste gang

Leave her, Johnny, leave her

Og derom lyder høyt vår sang

And it’s time for us to leave her

Ref:

Leave her, Johnny, leave her

Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her

For the voyage is done and the winds don’t blow

And it’s time for us to leave her

Nå Færder vi i sikte har,

--

og Torbjørnskjær, vi ligger klar.

--

Ref:

Og så vi stryker fjorden inn

--

for fulle seil og sydlig vind.

--

Ref:

--

vi skimter reisens mål fra mers.

--

Ref:

Snart over skoddens dis vi ser

--

vårt Akershus, og kanskje mer.

--

THE SAILOR’S FAREWELL

It’s our time to go now

Haul away your anchor

Haul away your anchor

It’s our sailing time

Get some sail upon her

Haul away your halyards

Haul away your halyards

It’s our sailing time

Get her on the course now

Haul away your foresheet

Haul away your foresheet

It’s our sailing time

Waves are rolling under

Haul away down Channel

Haul away down Channel

It’s our sailing time

It’s our time to go now

Haul away your anchor

Haul away your anchor

It’s our sailing time
